$250,000 Energy Efficiency Grant Secured – After Utility Denial

Overview
An East Coast indoor cultivator recently unlocked nearly $250,000 in energy incentives—after being told they were ineligible.

When NJ Nectar, an independent cannabis grower in New Jersey, began converting a solar-powered warehouse into an indoor cultivation facility, they knew efficient lighting was essential. What they didn’t expect was a letter from their utility rejecting efficiency rebates.

According to the utility, NJ Nectar didn’t qualify for rebates because they weren’t paying the state’s Societal Benefits Charge (SBC)—a utility bill line item that funds programs like efficiency and low-income discounts.

Strategy
NJ Nectar’s team hadn’t opted out of paying SBC. But the utility’s billing and rate departments couldn’t explain the missing charge and maintained that no SBC meant no eligibility.

Seinergy dug into details—analyzing bills, reviewing tariff structures, modeling load data, and conferring with account reps. Finally Seinergy discovered the underlying cause: the site’s solar system, installed by previous owners, produced more electricity than the facility used while dormant. Meters showed no net usage, so SBC charges didn’t trigger.

Seinergy determined that once NJ Nectar began cultivation, energy use would exceed solar generation, SBC charges would appear—and eligibility would follow.

Results
That’s exactly what happened. When grow lights turned on, so did the incentives. The utility reversed its decision, approving $250,000 in NJ Clean Energy grants for high-efficiency LEDs.

Seinergy also helped stage the buildout in three rebate-eligible phases to speed approvals and improve cash flow. In addition to coordinating with the lighting vendor to align payment terms with rebate timing, minimizing out-of-pocket cash.

Takeaway
What looked like a hard “no”  turned into a six-figure success story—thanks to persistence, careful analysis, and a deep understanding of utility bills and programs.
